Weighted vs unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA puts every course on the same 4.0 scale, so an A is 4.0 whether the class is regular or AP. A weighted GPA rewards harder courses by adding bonus points — most US high schools add +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, pushing the top of the scale to 5.0.

Bonus points apply to passing grades only; an F stays 0.0 regardless of course type, and any weighted course point is capped at 5.0.
Worked example
Three 1-credit courses: an A in AP (4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0), a B in Honors (3.0 + 0.5 = 3.5), and an A in a regular class (4.0). Weighted points = 5.0 + 3.5 + 4.0 = 12.5 over 3 credits = 4.17 weighted GPA, versus an unweighted 3.67.
How weighted GPA is calculated
weighted GPA = Σ(course points × credits) ÷ Σ credits, where each course’s points are its base grade points plus the honors/AP bonus. It is the same credit-weighted average as a normal GPA — the only difference is the bonus added before averaging.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an AP or honors class add to my GPA?
On the common US system, an Honors course adds +0.5 and an AP or IB course adds +1.0 to that course’s grade points, so an A in AP is worth 5.0 instead of 4.0.
What is the maximum weighted GPA?
Usually 5.0 — an A in an AP/IB course (4.0 + 1.0). Some schools cap differently, so check your school’s policy.
Does an F still get bonus points?
No. Bonus points apply to passing grades only; a failing grade stays 0.0 regardless of course type.
