High School GPA Calculator
Pick each course's letter grade, credits and course type. You get both an unweighted GPA (plain 4.0 scale) and a weighted GPA (with bonus points for Honors, AP and IB).
Weighted vs unweighted high school GPA
An unweighted GPA puts every course on the 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses — commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB — so a weighted GPA can exceed 4.0 (often up to 5.0).
| Course type | Bonus to grade points |
|---|---|
| Regular | +0.0 |
| Honors | +0.5 |
| AP / IB | +1.0 |
Scales vary between schools; check your transcript policy. This tool uses the most common convention above.
Frequently asked questions
Which GPA do colleges use?
Many recalculate to their own scale, but most look at the unweighted GPA alongside course rigour. Reporting both is normal.
Can a weighted GPA be above 4.0?
Yes — with AP/IB bonuses a weighted GPA can reach 4.5 or 5.0.
