What grade do I need on my final to get 95%?

Trying to land a 95% overall (roughly a A)? Enter your current grade and your final exam's weight to see the exact score you need.

The formula

needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with weight written as a decimal.

Worked example for a 95% target

Suppose you are sitting at 93% and the final is worth 50% of the grade. To finish on 95%: needed = (95 − 93 × 0.50) ÷ 0.50 = 97% on the final.

If the number is above 100%

A result over 100% means 95% is no longer reachable from the final alone — lower the target, ask about extra credit, or speak with your instructor.

Aiming for 95%: playing above the A-line

A 95% target is rarely about the letter — an A is an A from 93 up — so students who aim here are usually doing one of three things: building buffer so no single exam question can drop them out of A-territory, competing for class rank or a top-of-class distinction, or holding a near-perfect average for elite programmes where transcripts are read line by line. Name your real reason before committing the hours.

Mind the opportunity cost. The climb from 90 to 95 typically costs more effort than the climb from 80 to 90, because you are eliminating rare errors rather than learning content. That effort must come from somewhere — often another course or your health. If you proceed, train like a specialist: collect the hardest problems the course has offered, master the edge cases, and rehearse the exam's exact time budget. And if the calculator shows even 100% will not reach 95 overall, take the win an A already represents and move on.

Frequently asked questions

How is the score I need on the final calculated?

It uses needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. Enter your current grade and the final's weight and this page works it out instantly.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

Then 95% can't be reached on the final alone. Lower your target or look for extra credit.

Does the final exam weight matter a lot?

Yes — the smaller the final's weight, the harder it is to move your overall grade with it.
