The formula
needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with weight written as a decimal.
Worked example for a 90% target
Suppose you are sitting at 88% and the final is worth 50% of the grade. To finish on 90%: needed = (90 − 88 × 0.50) ÷ 0.50 = 92% on the final.
If the number is above 100%
A result over 100% means 90% is no longer reachable from the final alone — lower the target, ask about extra credit, or speak with your instructor.
Crossing into A- territory (90%)
Ninety percent is the most contested line in US grading — where the A-range begins and where a 3.7 replaces a 3.3 on your transcript. It is also the threshold many merit scholarships and dean's-list rules orbit. The arithmetic is unforgiving near it: at 87% with a 30% final you need 97%, but at 89% you need only 92%. Then protect your portfolio: if reaching 90 here demands a 98 while your other courses' finals suffer, an 89 plus two strong exams elsewhere usually beats a 90 plus two slumps.
