What grade do I need on my final to get 75%?

Trying to land a 75% overall (roughly a C)? Enter your current grade and your final exam's weight to see the exact score you need.

The formula

needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with weight written as a decimal.

Worked example for a 75% target

Suppose you are sitting at 73% and the final is worth 50% of the grade. To finish on 75%: needed = (75 − 73 × 0.50) ÷ 0.50 = 77% on the final.

If the number is above 100%

A result over 100% means 75% is no longer reachable from the final alone — lower the target, ask about extra credit, or speak with your instructor.

Holding a solid C (75%): building in a buffer

Students who target 75% are usually doing something smart: aiming above the 73% C-cutoff so a harsh grader or one bad essay question cannot knock them back into C- territory. Keep that logic going — whatever score the calculator says you need, prepare as if you need five points more. A buffer converts exam-day variance from a threat into noise.

Cumulative finals reward breadth at this level. Getting easy early-semester questions right is worth the same as wrestling the hardest late-semester material, and far more reliable, so review old units first. Simulate the real thing at least once: a timed, closed-book practice paper tells you exactly where you stand and trains pacing, which is where mid-band students bleed marks. If your syllabus mentions instructor discretion or rounding, a 74.6% often becomes a 75 — but never plan on it; plan on making the rounding question irrelevant.

Frequently asked questions

How is the score I need on the final calculated?

It uses needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. Enter your current grade and the final's weight and this page works it out instantly.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

Then 75% can't be reached on the final alone. Lower your target or look for extra credit.

Does the final exam weight matter a lot?

Yes — the smaller the final's weight, the harder it is to move your overall grade with it.
