What grade do I need on my final to get 73%?
Trying to land a 73% overall (roughly a C)? Enter your current grade and your final exam's weight to see the exact score you need.
The formula
needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with weight written as a decimal.
Worked example for a 73% target
Suppose you are sitting at 71% and the final is worth 50% of the grade. To finish on 73%: needed = (73 − 71 × 0.50) ÷ 0.50 = 75% on the final.
If the number is above 100%
A result over 100% means 73% is no longer reachable from the final alone — lower the target, ask about extra credit, or speak with your instructor.
Reaching 73%: crossing into flat-C territory
The 73% line is where a C- becomes a C on the standard US scale, and that step is worth real GPA: 2.0 points instead of 1.7. That difference matters most if you are near the 2.0 cumulative GPA floor that financial-aid satisfactory-academic-progress rules and academic-standing policies use — a C keeps you level, while a string of C-minuses slowly drags you under it.
Getting from around 70 to 73 is rarely about learning new material; it is about losing fewer points on material you half-know. Swap passive review for spaced retrieval: short self-testing sessions across several days beat one long re-read the night before. Find out the exam's structure and rehearse it — if it is multiple-choice, practise eliminating; if it is problems, practise showing method for partial credit. A three-point gap is closed with technique, sleep and one honest week of practice questions, not heroics.
Frequently asked questions
How is the score I need on the final calculated?
It uses needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. Enter your current grade and the final's weight and this page works it out instantly.
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
Then 73% can't be reached on the final alone. Lower your target or look for extra credit.
Does the final exam weight matter a lot?
Yes — the smaller the final's weight, the harder it is to move your overall grade with it.
