Germany grading culture
German grading runs in reverse: 1.0 is the best mark and 5.0 (nicht bestanden) is a fail, with 4.0 as the pass line. German markers are also famously conservative — a 1.0 is reserved for genuinely outstanding work, not merely correct work, so German grades cluster much more tightly around 2.0–3.0 than the wide spread US grades occupy.
Common conversion pitfall
A straight linear conversion undervalues German students precisely because German grades sit so tightly clustered. Many US graduate-admissions offices instead use the "Modified Bavarian Formula" for German transcripts — ask the receiving institution which method it actually applies before assuming a literal table lookup like this one is the final word.
