D- at 0.7: the lowest passing grade (where it exists at all)

The D- is the rarest citizen of the grade scale — a substantial number of schools do not award it, jumping straight from D to F, so first check whether your institution's scale even includes it. Where it exists, 0.7 grade points is barely distinguishable from failing in GPA terms: across 30 credits, a 3-credit D- versus a 3-credit B costs almost a quarter of a grade point on the average.

Functionally, treat a D- like an F with a consolation prize: you keep the credit hours and avoid re-paying for them, but the grade satisfies no prerequisite, no major requirement and no transfer rule. The economics usually favour a retake wherever grade replacement exists — moving 0.7 to 3.0 in one course beats almost any other use of a term slot. One exception: if the course is outside your programme and the credits still count toward graduation, banking the pass and spending your energy on courses that matter can be the rational, if unglamorous, choice.
