The 3.0 threshold: why a flat B is the most-quoted grade
No number is written into more fine print than 3.0. Internship postings, graduate-school minimums, tuition-reimbursement policies, some car-insurance student discounts and countless scholarship floors all say 3.0 or above — so the flat B is less a grade than a gatekeeping line. A term of straight Bs keeps you exactly on it, which is the problem: on the line means one B- from under it.
If your cumulative GPA is near 3.0, think in offsets: each B- (2.7) needs a B+ (3.3) elsewhere to hold the average, credit-for-credit. Guard the heavy courses — a 4-credit B- takes a 4-credit B+ to cancel, not a 1-credit one. And when you dip, remember the recovery maths is slow: with 60 credits banked at 2.9, even a straight-A 15-credit term only lifts you to about 3.12. The cheapest time to defend 3.0 is before you lose it.
